Review of 'Ordeal'

Een hele fijne black metal plaat die zich deze maand tussen mijn post bevindt komt voor de verandering niet van heel ver, maar gewoon uit Nederland. Fenris bewijst op 'Ordeal' (hun tweede volledige album) de kunst van het zwart metal smeden bijzonder goed te verstaan. Over het algemeen is men wat lang van stof (acht nummers in bijna 60 minuten), maar men weet de boel gelukkig behoorlijk interessant te houden. Riffs worden precies de goede lengte toegekend, overgangen verlopen soepel en de sferische tussenstukken, ingekleurd met mooie, rustige keyboardpartijen, mogen er ook wezen. Luister maar eens naar het bombastische titelnummer, dat naar het einde toe zelfs nog opgesierd wordt met wat krachtige koorsamenzang. Qua stijl binnen de black metal speelt Fenris iets wat het dichtst bij de viking metal ligt, de eerste referentie die mij te binnen schiet is een ongepolijste versie van Thyrfing, met de keyboards minder in het algemene geluid geïntegreerd. De plaat is in eigen beheer uitgebracht en alleen verkrijgbaar via de website, ik zou daar dus maar heel gauw een kijkje gaan nemen, zeker als je labelbaas bent.

A very fine release in the black metal genre for this month is produced by the Dutch band Fenris. On 'Ordeal', their second full length effort, they prove that they are pretty good at forging some high quality black metal songs. The tracks are pretty lengthy (eight songs in about 60 minutes), but the guys manage to keep things interesting at all times. Riffs have exactly the right length, transitions sound natural and are executed well, on top of that the atmospheric intermezzos, filled by beautiful, tranquil keyboards are just plainly stunning. Just listen to the bombastic title track, that even has some powerful choir singing near the end. The black metal lies closest to the Viking metal subgenre, and the first reference that sprang to mind was an unpolished version of Thyrfing, with they keyboard parts less integrated into the songs. They recorded released the record all by themselves and the only way to get a copy of it is by ordering it through their website. I suggest you do this very quickly, especially people who just happen to have a record company.
